Vebjørn Sand

A searcher for freedom with his heart in the Antarctic...

Artist Vebjørn Sand, born in 1966, is one of Norways most popular artists. He has studied at Statens Kunstakademi, Oslo, Kunstakadamiet, Prague and The Art Students League of New York. He has studied under Walther Aas, Rolf Schønfeldt, Ronald Sherr, Peter Cox and Michael Burban. He has appeared at a number of art exhibitions both at home and abroad and is primarily renowned as a painter.

It began with the Antarctic expeditions of 1993/94 and 1996/97. He returned home from the icy wastes with frost bite and polar malaria, a condition that became his gateway to the enigmatic and mystical, his imagination flowed freely. The icy cold and unspoiled nature is pictured for eternity in his paintings and later became a source of inspiration which exploded the barriers of traditional canvas. The adventure landscape of Trollslottet at Holmekollen/Oslo, created in 1997/98, is a vision of the mountains of the Antarctic. He then built the Keplersternen (Kepler star) at Gardermoen airport (2000) based on the principles of Johannes Kepler’s geometry. In 2001 he built the Leonardobroen (Leonardo bridge) over the E18 highway, based on drawings by Leonardo da Vinci.

Vebjørn Sand changed the atmosphere and brought a piece of Antarctic winter adventure into Norwegian homes when he designed the Antarctic service for Magnor Glassverk in 2002, with motifs taken from his famous paintings. As Vebjørn Sand himself puts it: The Antarctic service is literally designed to bring a glimpse of the South Pole right into peoples’ homes.
