Sofia Bergman, who prefers pure and simple forms, is what one might call a designer of utility items. She works close to the glassblowers. Sofia finds the heat and atmosphere of the glassworks inspiring and always longs to return. Here, teamwork enables those present to find a mutual form of expression. Art is created. Sofia was born in Uppsala, but her roots are in Ångermanland. After studying art and interior decorating, she worked in an advertising agency for a couple of years. Life as an art director encouraged her taste for art, and in 1996, her dream of becoming a full-fledged artist was realized. Sofia began to paint full-time. Today, she is an established artist who has succeeded in finding her own distinctive way of conveying thoughts and emotions. Sofia paints everything close at hand. She loves fruit and is fascinated by the grey scales of the sea and islands. When Sofia works in glass, she creates pieces that she, herself, would like to use. The aim is always the same: designs must incorporate function. Take the drinking-glass series Hipp, for example. It is named after Sofia’s nephew, whose Vietnamese name is Hiep, pronounced Hipp. His whole life is like a party – and so are the glasses. The large dishes Frostblomster and Ringdans bear a fascinating similarity to ice. In this series, Sofia realized the idea of applying glue and then blasting over it. She wanted to recreate the sensation of finger drawing on a frosted windowpane or in the condensation that forms on the glass door of a shower. And she succeeded. The much-loved Magnolia vase is the result of thousands of sketches of magnolias that bloom on the trees outside Sofia’s kitchen window. The artist’s relationship to the flowers was first expressed in paintings, which later resulted in vases. And each spring, just like Sofia Bergman, you can fill these vases with fresh-cut magnolias and enjoy their beauty. |
