When Kosta Boda recruited new designers in 2007 the choice fell upon Åsa Jungnelius. An artist who wants to challenge the current view of what is tasteful, and has been called a glass feminist. Åsa is part of the new generation of designers at Kosta Boda in Småland, Sweden. Småland was in fact where she started her thorough education. She became a glass blower, a profession that requires skill, precision and feeling. After that she went off to England, Kenya, Italy and the USA to further educate herself. When she returned to Sweden she started her studies at the College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Åsa is famous for her suggestive art, which has been exhibited at a great number of venues. Some of the exhibitions have been with the group WeWorkInAFragileMaterial, a group of artists that she is a part of. Before she became affiliated to Kosta Boda, she became renowned for the gigantic lipsticks in glass that she designed. Her purpose was to discuss consumerism. "Make up has become a status symbol, and what we consume becomes our identity. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it's undeniably an interesting phenomenon." She has designed the series Make Up for Kosta Boda. The almost half metre tall colourful nail polish bottles in the series have attracted a lot of attention. The effect of seeing everyday objects so out of scale is striking. |
