Åsa Jungnelius

When Kosta Boda recruited new designers in 2007 the choice fell upon Åsa Jungnelius. An artist who wants to challenge the current view of what is tasteful, and has been called a glass feminist. Åsa is part of the new generation of designers at Kosta Boda in Småland, Sweden. Småland was in fact where she started her thorough education. She became a glass blower, a profession that requires skill, precision and feeling. After that she went off to England, Kenya, Italy and the USA to further educate herself. When she returned to Sweden she started her studies at the College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.

Åsa is famous for her suggestive art, which has been exhibited at a great number of venues. Some of the exhibitions have been with the group WeWorkInAFragileMaterial, a group of artists that she is a part of. Before she became affiliated to Kosta Boda, she became renowned for the gigantic lipsticks in glass that she designed. Her purpose was to discuss consumerism.

"Make up has become a status symbol, and what we consume becomes our identity. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it's undeniably an interesting phenomenon."

She has designed the series Make Up for Kosta Boda. The almost half metre tall colourful nail polish bottles in the series have attracted a lot of attention. The effect of seeing everyday objects so out of scale is striking.

She often bases her designs on stereotype to be able to exaggerate or puncture the usual perception of the object. Her design revolves around aesthetic hierarchies, "bling-bling" and fashion. The feminist points that she makes are characteristic of her work. She also offers commentary on social issues such as taste and class. From a visual point of view, one can say that her design is far removed from Scandinavian minimalism. She creates without inhibition and designs things to be fascinated by.

One of Åsa's first tasks at Kosta Boda was to create a series of tableware. The exciting result was the series Jackie; punky gold decoration for the dining table where beauty and function unite. Gigantic bowls and vases in delicate pink, purple and orange send the thoughts back to the extravagance of mansions and castles. Add to this the bold strokes of gold. To Åsa, Jackie is a mix between two cultures and two eras. The form is borrowed from the aristocratic milieus of past days and the objects are designed to imitate "the old style". But when it comes to the gold that adorns Jackie, the bold strokes convey a feeling of "rock'n'roll". It's a kind of action painting that gives uniqueness to each bowl and vase. The series also includes robust glasses that are artistically decorated with gold. The gold looks like it's running over the brim. She wants her glass to hover between order and uniqueness; it makes it more human and gives them soul.
