Kjell Engman

A feast in colour and imagination combined with advanced craftsmanship. After receiving his education at art schools in Gothenburg and Stockholm he immediately started work at Kosta Boda in 1978. His designs for Kosta Boda include a wide array of things. One side of his production is the colourful, cheeky and decorative series The Band, which consists of guitars in different sizes and colours. On the other hand, he has also created bowls like Sweden where a Swedish midsummer scene is shown. The beholder gets to see the perfect glimpse of midsummer celebrations including dancing around the maypole.

A characteristic feature in all of Kjell's design is the humour and the desire to narrate. The names of the products awaken the imagination and make your associations run wild. The vases and bowls in the series Dino are an excellent example of the coherence between name and form. The round organic shapes and the name really do make you think of dinosaur eggs.

Like a true artist Kjell observes the zeitgeist and turns it into tangible objects. In Catwalk he is inspired by fashion whilst he comments on the fashion industry. The series has grown with time and now includes vases, sculptures and lamps.

Kjell's long and successful career has earned him a number of awards, and the list of his exhibitions is long. He is also represented at a number of museums, such as the National Museum of Fine Art in Stockholm, the Röhs Museum of Arts and Crafts and the Museum of glass in Växjö. Kjell's artistic touch can also be detected in a number of public places. He has been commissioned to decorate churches, hospitals, schools and banks.
