Erika Lagerbielke |
 |
Erika Lagerbielke's talent for design brought her to Orrefors on a scholarship. She was employed as a designer at the glassworks in 1982, a year before she graduated from the College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm where she majored in industrial design. A year later she was given the assignment to design crystal tableware for a younger audience. The result was the Intermezzo range that was to become one of the best selling tableware series of all times. Erika has said the following about the characteristic in the stem of the foot: "All my love for the art and craft of crystal is encapsulated in the blue Intermezzo drop. All my knowledge is gathered in that drop." The combination of the glass blower's expert knowledge and Erika's drive and ambition were necessary to put the blue bubble inside the stem. Intermezzo has existed for over 20 years and the range is steadily growing. Intermezzo is now also available in a version with a black drop. Time and again Erika has proven that she masters the art of creating beautiful and useful tableware. The individual items are just as outstanding as the range as a whole. Her range of stemware, Difference that was created in 2002 is truly revolutionary. It was scientifically and methodically created to enhance the experience of food and drink. To maximally enhance the flavour of the drink, the shapes of the glasses were developed in collaboration with the wine connoisseur Bengt Göran Kronstam. The shape of the glass is adapted to the character of the wine. This is why there is not only one, but two different white wine glasses, both fruity and crispy wines get a glass to enhance their flavours. |

The simple idiom is the common theme in all of Erika's design, regardless of which technique she explores. The collaboration with the skilled craftsmen has always been important to turn ideas into tangible results. This desire to explore the possibilities of the material is also noticeable when you see her at work as a professor at the University of Växjö. She stresses the importance of mastering the known glass techniques as well as developing new ones. Erika has mainly designed utility items that have won acclaim by critics and consumers alike. She has also created art glass where the optical possibilities of crystal are fully used. Colour and cut are used to tame the light. In the art glass exhibition Visions in Glass 2007 she displayed coloured works in the graal technique which has been patented by Orrefors. Layers of glass are added on top of each other to create a depth in the pattern. Erika is very well known for her beautiful utility items, but she has also been commissioned to design public spaces. Her designs have been exhibited in innumerable exhibitions across the world. You will find her represented at the National Museum of Fine Art in Stockholm, the Röhs Museum of Arts and Crafts in Gothenburg and The Ebeltoft Museum of Glass in Denmark |
