Janus Mini ED 100-26 from Kosta Boda is a limited edition glass sculpture by Bertil Vallien, inspired by Janus – the Roman mythology god with eyes directed in two directions. In Vallien's artistry, Janus becomes a symbol of man's dual nature, of transitions and of the meeting between different states.

Bertil Vallien has returned to the Janus motif since the mid-1990s. In the sand-cast glass head, two expressions meet: one side is awake while the other is resting. They are not opposed to each other, but rather form an ongoing dialogue between two sides of the same existence.

Sand casting is a technique that has become strongly associated with Bertil Vallien's art. The raw and poetic expression differs from the perfection of traditionally cut crystal glass and gives each sculpture a depth and an enigmatic character. In Janus, the transparency of the glass, the enclosed face and the natural shades of the material interact in a way that changes depending on the light and viewing angle.

Janus Mini is produced in Kosta in a limited edition of only 100 pieces and is presented on a powerful granite base. The combination of the transparent glass and the dark stone creates a clear contrast and reinforces the sculpture's archaic and timeless expression.

Despite its smaller format, Janus Mini carries many of the themes that characterize Bertil Vallien's art – man, time, dreams, the visible and the hidden.
